5.3. Syllabus

The course, Political cultures, politics of the past, and historiography. History of Spanish nationalism, will address the following topics:

Topic 1. Political Cultures and Nationalism.

• - Political Cultures and History.
• - Genesis and accomplishment of a concept.
• - Political Cultures of the Spanish Nationalism: liberalism, republicanism, socialism and fascism.

Topic 2. Politics of the past/politiques of memory.

• - Public uses of History, politics of the Past, and politics of memory.
• - Memory, heritage, identity.
• - The empire of emotions: between politic passions and Storytelling.
• -  Historians, Nation and Wars.
• - Thinking of History: calebrating the past. Festivals and commemorations in contemporary Spain. Celebrate the Nation in Spanish Restoration, Francoism, and Democracy.

Topic 3. History of Spanish historiography.

• - Representing History, writing the Nation.
• - The institutionalization of national Spanish historiography.
• - National History and professional Historiography: 1900-1936.
• - Historiography under Franco's rule, and the metamorphosis of the historian: the birth of contemporary history.
• - Democratic Transition and Historians: the normalization of a professional community.
• - Nationalisms, historical memory, and historiographical revisionisms (1990-2012).
